Colombia Black Condor
Tasting Notes: Berry, crème brûlée, butterscotch.
The Black Condor Project was born out of the necessity to create a meaningful impact in Gaitania and Planadas, regions historically isolated due to the Colombian conflict with the Ex-FARC guerrillas. For decades these communities endured the hardships of violence, with the conflict deeply affecting them from 1965 until the peace treaty was signed in 2015. For the indigenous Nasawex community, a peace treaty in 1996 marked the start of a long journey toward recovery. Today, the Black Condor Project aims to improve the quality of life for the 4,800 coffee-growing families in Gaitania by fostering the development of a thriving specialty coffee industry. By 2026, the project aspires to directly impact 500 families, up from the current 120 participants, while also enhancing the region's coffee production capacity, which already exceeds 4,200 bags annually. An essential milestone for 2025 is enabling 50% of the founding producers (60 families) to cultivate specialty coffee varietals, increasing their income and paving the way for sustainable growth. This initiative represents a commitment to not only economic development but also the empowerment of communities long affected by conflict, providing them with opportunities for resilience and prosperity through the art of coffee cultivation.
Gaitania, nestled in the rugged mountains of Tolima, Colombia, is a remote and fertile region ideal for coffee cultivation. With its lush landscapes and high-altitude terrain, it provides the perfect conditions for growing specialty coffee. Home to small-scale farming families, Gaitania has a rich agricultural heritage but has also faced significant challenges due to its location in a historically conflict-affected area. For decades, coffee producers here endured the impacts of Colombia’s armed conflict, including violence and extortion. Yet, coffee became their lifeline—a symbol of resilience and hope. Today, the Black Condor Project builds on this legacy, strengthening Gaitania’s community through coffee. By connecting producers to better opportunities, we empower them to rebuild and thrive. Through every harvest, we’re not just growing coffee—we’re fostering unity, resilience, and a brighter future for Gaitania.
